Upcoming Show: Sound Theatre “Her/e”


Her/e is a performance presented as sound theater that integrates electronic music, sound installations and Chunyang Yao’s movements. This will be Yao’s first performance with a relatively content of Naxi. It will show Yao’s reflection on her ethno identity after years of being away from her hometown. In addition, she intends to illustrate the mutual relationship between sound and body, where is the body moves to the sound, and the movement of the body stimulates some symbolic sounds.

《此地》 是由纳西族音乐人姚春旸创编、作曲和演奏的一个集电子音乐、声音装置和她的肢体动作为一体的声音剧场。这将是姚春旸首次以相对具象的纳⻄族内容来展现的演出,它将表现姚春旸在远离故乡多年后对自己民族身份的反思。这个声音剧场里姚春旸还将突出声音与肢体的关系:肢体因为声音而动起来; 动作产生声音。

Chunyang Yao is a composer, vocalist and electronic improviser of Naxi descent born in Lijiang, China. Graduated from Music Conservatory of Shanghai with a Master’s in Theory and Composition.  In 2014, She launched solo electronic music and voice performance project. She is currently experimenting with combining native Naxi language, field recording, and synthesizers to create an improvised live performance in the vein of Music Concrète, Noise, and Drone.  She released full length electronic album “Shining Cracks” in 2016. following her album release she toured as solo experimental electronic project in five cities of China. In 2019, Yao released a new EP, which she worked on in the previous year.

姚春旸,生于丽江,纳西族,作曲与电子音乐演奏和制作人。毕业于上海音乐学院作曲与作曲技术理论专业,硕士学位,师从于朱世瑞教授。2015年起开始个人电子音乐计划主要以人声、实景录音(Field Recording)和合成器为主要的元素进行创作和现场演出, 风格为具象音乐 (musique concrète) 、蜂鸣 (Drone)和噪音,发行Shining Cracks (2016) 和 A Trip To Nowhere(EP, 2019) 两张电子乐专辑。

At the age of 4, Yao moved from Lijiang to Kunming with her parents and grandmother. Since her grandmother could not speak Chinese, Naxi native language was the main language used at home and although she grew up in a mandarin external environment, due to her childhood home environment, Yao still can speak in Naxi language. Yao’s birthplace, Lijiang, is as a distant but familiar home to her and she is full of passion and attention to everything that happens in her hometown.

 

4岁随父母工作调动搬至昆明,因外婆不通汉语,在家中以纳西语交流,虽在一个汉语的环境中成长,姚春旸仍讲一口流利的纳西话。丽江于她就是一个远而又熟悉的家,她关注着家乡的一切。

 

Lijiang is located at the junction of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Its natural landscapes are particularly spectacular, such as lakes, rivers, snow mountains, and meadows. Lijiang is in a geographical environment where several ethnic groups intersect. Throughout the history and till now, Naxi people lived side by side among more powerful and dominant ethnic groups but maintained their own ethnic characteristics and culture. 

 

 

纳西族以外向的一种姿态在其特别的狭缝地域中面对强大、主导民族的融合,至今却依然能保持着自己民族的特性。地处川滇藏交接地段的丽江自然景观壮观奇异,让人难忘。

幼年时对丽江的记忆,如她居住的地方——三坊一照壁的院落,熟悉的气味——清晨夹杂着一股沁人的冷空气的阳光洒满走廊,松枝铺满地散发出的味道就有了节日的气氛等这些细节深深影响着她。

 

Back to the music of A Trip To Nowhere, Chunyang Yao describe “… during my pregnancy I had gone through a period of time that i had to focus on my body, while in ‘waiting’ state of mind, this allowed me to experience the ‘natural’ state of existence. It seems to me that if we follow the natural Qi, our body, our existence states, and the way of doing things in life, everything has its direction and growth pattern. A Trip To Nowhere is also looking for a natural state, expressing less intentional corse, and waiting to be inspired by natural progress. from an “output” perspective, the in the past three years was blank for me, but looking back, it had been very rewarding, after all, I am mom to two babies now, but I also experienced life in a kind of “waiting” state, almost static, somewhat passive, sometimes helpless or even suppressed, which pulled me in the direction of positve growth.

在A Trip To Nowhere的创作记中,姚春旸写过这样一段话:“…两年前怀孕的时候不得不把大部分时间关注在自己身体上,’等待’让我体会到存在的‘自然’状态。似乎我们的身体、生命中一切的存在和办事方式,如果能顺应自然的气息一切就有它的方向和生长方式。A Trip To Nowhere也在找寻一种自然的状态,不太刻意地表达,静候在自然行进中得到启发。这三年大片的“输出”空白,回过头来看却收获很大,毕竟有两个生命的诞生。孕育成了一段修行,不是经历大风大浪的那种,而在一种接近静止、有些被动、有时无奈甚至压抑的’等待‘中体会成长。”
