Chunyang Yao is a composer, vocalist and sound artist of Naxi descent born in Lijiang, China. Graduated from Music Conservatory of Shanghai with a Master’s in Theory and Composition, studied with Professor Shirui, Zhu.  In 2015, She launched solo electronic music and voice performance project. She is currently experimenting with combining native Naxi language, field recording, and electronic instruments to create an improvised live performance in the vein of Music Concrète, Noise, and Drone.

In addition to scoring films, dances, and short films, she has composed, produced and executed a number of grand art and cultural performances. She released full length electronic album Shining Cracks  in 2016. Following her album release she toured as solo experimental electronic project in five cities of China. In 2019, Yao released a new EP, which she worked on in the previous year. In 2020, she began to use her body movements, sound installation and voice to perform a series of performances known as “Sound Theater” with Naxi culture. In November 2020,  she successfully performed the first work Her/e in Guangzhou.

2021 Music Hidden Meadow include in compilation Anthology of Experimental Music From China, it released by a Italian Label Unexplained Sounds Group.

2021 Work Her/e excerpt version was included in IKLECTIK [off-site]  NUMBERS MATTER 121 – Episodes 2&3 live stream concert.

2020,2019, 2016-2014 Music Director of Guangzhou Breaking Arts Festival, collaborated with modern dancers and musicians from all of the world, such as: Sabu Toyozumi, Tieqiao Li, Sloth, Fangqiong Zhu, Yiyuan Liang, Hanying.

2020 Her/e, a performance presented as sound theater that integrates electronic music, sound installations and Chunyang Yao’s movements. It created, performed and produced by Yao in En Space, Guangzhou.

2019 Performed in cn Sound & Visual Festival 2019 Jingdezhen

2019 Participate musician project Hokkaido/ Lijiang Culture Exchange Program, field recording, perfomance with musician Weiwei and Jianhong Li  in Lijiang, China and Hokkaido, Japan.

2019 Guest musician for Sainkho Namchylak with Kazuhisa Uchihashi Duo concert, Guangzhou

2018 Participate musician in project Found Sound China, spent two weeks traveling and collecting sounds, convening in Beijing for five days to produce, perform.

2016 Performed in Music Festival “Wild Zen”, which held by movie star Kun Chen.

2016 Tour for album Shining Cracks releasing, performed  in Beijing (Fruity Space), Shanghai (Basemet6), Chengdu (Nu Space), Kunming (TCG Art Space), Guangzhou (Loft345)  of China.

2015 Orchestrated for movie The Dead End.

2015 “Weaving” Trio concert in Chongqiong, performed with Sabu Toyozumi and Baishui

2011-2013 Collaborated with fashion photographer Shxpir Huang, produced music “Made In China Girl”(2011), ”Happy New Gear”(2012) and “Bad Girl”(2013).
